Our Inner Swan

Our Inner Swan - Blog by Amanda Van Lagen

I'm not here to dictate how to navigate this world, but I've come to realize that each of us has the right to carve our own unique path, one that resonates with our true selves. Life isn't about adhering to rigid rules or conforming to a single standard. Instead of fixating on external appearances or measuring our value by societal benchmarks, let's turn our gaze inward, towards our authentic essence.

There is a fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen called The Ugly Duckling: A mother duck hatches a group of eggs, but one duckling is different, more prominent, awkward, and not as cute. The other animals mock him, and even his own family rejects him. Feeling out of place, the "ugly duckling" runs away and endures a harsh winter alone. When spring arrives, he sees a group of beautiful swans. Expecting rejection, he prepares for more heartache. But when he looks into the water, he realizes he has transformed; he was never a duckling but a majestic swan. The very thing that made him different was what made him special all along.

This story reminds us that life has no fixed meaning; we are the ones who give it meaning. Our worth isn't defined by external achievements or how we physically appear to the world, but rather by how thoroughly we understand and accept ourselves. I encourage you to look beyond your skin and the reflection staring back at you and deeply into your heart. Here, you can softly sink into the sacred space of your truth.

I explore this idea further in my book, Don't Chase Your Dreams. Allow Them to Come to You. We often believe that external successes will bring happiness, but the real battle isn't with the outside world; it's within us. We judge ourselves harshly, question our worth, criticize our appearance and allow doubt to consume us. This inner struggle creates suffering, and can lead us into what some call the dark night of the soul, a period of deep introspection, loss, and emotional pain. But here's the paradox: it is within the darkness that we find our light. Through struggle, we uncover the truth. Through pain, we gain wisdom. The moments that feel like breaking points are often the experiences that awaken us to who we are.

The meaning of life isn't something we search for outside ourselves; it's something we create from within. Stand up for yourself. Accept yourself. Understand yourself. Express your truth without censorship, hesitation, or fear of judgment.

Trying to be what others expect is not the greatest gift you can give the world. Your true, authentic self is. And yes, that authenticity comes with messiness, tears, joy, fairness, and fierceness, but that is your gift. If you don't share your uniqueness, it will never be expressed because no one else can bring to the world what you can.

I ask you to pause for a moment and ask yourself: Are you embracing who you truly are, or are you holding back? Do you live in a way that leaves the people around you without doubt about what you believe in?

Say who you are. Be who you are. That is enough; it always has been.

When you embrace your inner swan, the unique beauty, strength, and truth within, you step fully into the life that was always meant to be yours.
